Emory Winship Names Director of Oncology Nursing

Deena Gilland RN, BSN, OCN
Deena Gilland RN, BSN, OCN - Acting Department Director of Inpatient Oncology Services, began her Oncology career at Emory in 1988 after graduating from Georgia College and State University. As Department Director for Inpatient Oncology Services, she oversees the operations of both the Leukemia and the Bone Marrow Transplant Units 6E and 7E, the quality initiatives related to BMT and Hematology/Oncology areas, as well as serves at the liasion to the outpatient clinic.

Gilland previously served as oncology services department director for Emory University Hospital.  She joined Emory University Hospital in 1988 as a staff nurse in oncology and served as nurse manager in the Hematology/Leukemia Unit from 1996 to 2005. 

“We are delighted to announce Deena Gilland’s appointment as director of nursing,” said Dr. Leyland-Jones.  “Deena brings a wealth of experience, a tremendous focus on patient care and a wonderful style of leadership to this critical position within the Winship Cancer Institute.” 

Gilland earned an MS in Leadership and Healthcare Administration through Emory’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.  She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and serves as a faculty member in Emory Healthcare’s Oncology Residency Program.  Gilland also is a member of the American Nurses Association and the Georgia Organization of Nurse Executives. 

“Deena is a superb nurse and an exceptional leader,” said Susan Grant, MS, RN, chief nursing officer for Emory Healthcare.  “We are thrilled she will be taking on these responsibilities. “

As a leader in patient-centered cancer care and research, Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute serves as the coordinating center for a vast array of resources in medical, surgical, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and the subspecialties of cancer care throughout Emory University--from blood and bone marrow stem cell transplants to internationally recognized breast reconstruction.
