Dryness of the throat and larynx can be caused by a variety of factors from environmental conditions to medications.  Excessive dryness of the vocal folds can ultimately cause vocal nodules and voice impairment. Keeping the voice adequately hydrated is critical to avoid these conditions.

Causes or Contributing Factors
Environmental conditions such as smoke-filled rooms or exposure to chemicals can cause vocal fold dryness.  In addition, simple over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines can dry out the respiratory tract.  Dryness of the mouth and throat is a common side effect of many prescription medications such as anti-depressants.  Consult your physician about the side effects of any medications you may be taking to determine the risks of vocal dryness, especially if you use your voice professionally.

Treatments:
Vocal hydration is the key deterrent to vocal fold dryness.  Tips for maintaining
adequate hydration include:

    • Drinking at least eight to ten, eight ounce glasses of water each day
    • Avoiding caffeine and alcohol.  Both of these substances cause dehydration.
    • Not smoking and avoiding smoke-filled rooms
    • Avoiding environments with dry air.
    • Minimize the effects of dry air produced by air conditioning and gas furnaces with a humidifier.
