There are many sources of pain in the lower back (lumbar spine). The spine is divided into the front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections. The anterior section includes the lumbar disc, which has fibers that can send pain signals to the disc. Your doctor may try to tell whether the pain is coming from your disc by performing a discogram. The disc is made of two layers. The outer layer is called the annulus fibrosus and may have cracks called fissures that are a source of back pain. The second internal layer is called the nucleus pulposus. When this layer pushes through the outer layer you may have a herniated disc. This layer is thought to have materials that irritate the nerve root to your leg which contribute to the pain going down the leg called sciatica.
