Acupuncture and Pain Management

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, which was discovered thousands of years ago and then perfected by the Chinese, stands the test of time. According to traditional Chinese philosophy for the body to be in total health, there must be a balance between Yin and Yang. That balance is held in place when Qi (energy) is moving freely in the body. When the energy becomes obstructed or stagnant, it is manifested by sickness and disease. Acupuncture, the insertion of needles into well-defined points that correspond with anatomical areas and organs unblock Qi and hence restore the inner balance.

Why Do People Choose Acupuncture?

There are many reasons why people from all walks of life choose acupuncture. Besides relieving pain, acupuncture is used to treat a variety of other physical and emotional problems. Some people use acupuncture as a method of relaxation or stress relief, while others use acupuncture to maintain good health. Acupuncture is prevelant all over the world, and in several places it is used as the primary health care system. Acupuncture was introduced to the United States in 1972 and its use continues to expand.

How is Acupuncture Performed?

Acupuncture focuses on the WHOLE person. The mind is not separate from the body. They both must be nourished. In order to effectively do this, our acupuncturist will not only conduct a physical examination relating to your problem, but she will also obtain a thorough history of your health. A treatment plan will be made based on those results. Acupuncture is a highly individualized treatment, so the type and number of treatments vary from person to person depending on your problem and the length of time you have had that problem.

Tell Me More . . .

You will be made very comfortable, then your needles will be placed. The needles are very small, about the size of a strand of hair. They are stainless steel or gold plated disposable and sterile. They are not reused. The actual stick is relatively painless, but some areas and some people may be more sensitive than others.

Most people will feel a pressure sensation with the insertion, and once the needle is manipulated, you may feel a tingle or a slight ache. The feeling is call DAQI and is a good indication that the treatment is working.

Depending on your treatment plan, your needles may be stimulated with heat or electricity (electro-acupuncture). Most treatments last for 10 to 30 minutes. After treatments, some may experience a sensation of well-being and relation, especially when electrical stimulation is used. Some auricular (ear) needles may be left in place (usually for about 1 to 2 weeks).

Is Acupuncture Safe?

In the hands of medically trained personnel, acupuncture is VERY SAFE.
